The Basque language

Basque, or Euskara as it is also known, is truly a unique language. It is one of the few languages in Europe that not only doesn’t belong to the Indo-European family of languages but is unrelated to any other language in the world. Estimates vary, but approximately 800,000 people speak Basque, most of whom live in the Basque Country: the Spanish-French border area. The language is very different from all the other languages in the other great linguistic families, and it is therefore called a language isolate. The only languages which have any similarity with Basque have long since died out. The language is unique and very different from other European languages, even Spanish, the language of the country where most of the Basque Country lies. Not everyone in the Basque Country speaks the language: only a quarter of the population still speaks it, with the majority speaking Spanish.
